Always Call The Police After A Car Accident.

What to Do at the Scene of the Car Accident

  • Stop and attempt to remain calm.
  • Check for injuries and call 911 if immediate medical attention is necessary.
  • Move the cars to the right side of the road unless it would injure someone further or put anyone in harm’s way.
    • Turn on the hazard lights and use cones or flares if you have them.
  • Call the police, even if the accident is minor. A police report will be useful in filing a claim with your insurance company for property damage or injuries.
  • Gather information from the other party such as:
    • Names and contact information of drivers, passengers, and witnesses to the accident
    • Driver’s license numbers
    • Make, model, year, license plate number, and VIN of the cars
    • Insurance company names and policy numbers
    • Police officer’s names, badge numbers, and contact information
    • Accident location
    • Photos of the cars and the accident scene
    • The police report number
  • Never, ever admit fault. Do not sign any documents unless it is for the police, and limit discussion of the accident to the police or medical professionals providing care. Avoid discussing the details of the accident with the other party.
  • Make an accurate record by telling the police exactly what happened. Do not guess or speculate about what may have happened.
    • If you are still in shock from the accident and are not sure how injured you are, make sure to tell the officer that you are not yet sure of the extent of your injuries (rather than telling them you are not injured). If time passes and you find that you are, in fact, injured, this will help your case.
