After a 16-day trial, the PARRIS trial team and attorneys Brian Panish and Matthew Stumpf of Panish Shea & Boyle LLP secured a massive $56,556,953 verdict against trucking giant CRST’s driver. This victory was for two brothers who were severely injured when CRST’s driver crossed into their lane and caused a horrific head-on collision.
This accident happened in July 2014 when the brothers were on their way to their family’s annual fishing trip in Mammoth Lake, California. They were driving through a construction zone on northbound State Route 14 when the southbound CRST big rig driver crossed over the yellow line and right into the brothers’ path, hitting them head-on at a very high rate of speed.
“The jury’s verdict will enable the brothers to get the life-long medical treatment necessary to live as normal of a life as possible. This verdict will serve as a wake-up call to any company that neglects the safety of the public at large,” said R. Rex Parris. “The lives of these two men were forever changed as a result of this horrific accident and the negligent employment practices of CRST,” added Brian Panish.
The trial began on January 22, 2018 at the Los Angeles Superior Court. The big rig driver admitted fault for this accident, leaving the jury to decide what was rightfully owed to the brothers. During the trial, the defense for CRST and its driver, Fred M. Blum, Michael E. Gallagher and Lisa Stevenson of Bassi Edlin Huie & Blum LLP, tried to downplay the brothers’ injuries. The jury was not swayed, and they understood the importance of these brothers getting the payment they need. On February 21, 2018, the jury came to the verdict of $56 million for the brothers, which brought much-needed relief to the family.
